Instructions

Setup & Usage Instructions:

Installation: OSX and Windows

IMPORTANT! Ensure you are using Traktor v2.6.2 or above and that you’ve backed up any custom Maschine Templates you’re using via the Controller Editor first.

Unzip the downloaded file and double click the ‘Remix Decks.ncc’ file. This will load the template into Controller Editor (overwriting any templates you had loaded previously). Controller Editor should then load the mapping automatically into your Maschine. If not, click ‘Connect’.

Open Traktor, go to ‘Preferences’, then ‘Controller Manager’. Click the ‘Import’ button at the bottom of this screen and browse for the TSI file you’ve just downloaded. This will load TWO individual TSI pages into Traktor (one for Deck C and one for Deck D). Ensure that the In-Port and Out-Port on this screen are both set to your Maschine controller.

Loading Sets / Samples:

You can load either full Remix Sets or individual samples into each of the 128 Sample Cells.

Press the Browse button to toggle full screen browser display on / off.

To load a Remix Set, use the Browse Up / Down buttons to browse files in the File Browser and hold Shift to browse through the folder tree. The Expand / Collapse button will open / close the folder you currently have highlighted in the folder tree. Once you’ve highlighted the set you wish to load from the File Browser, press the Load Set button.

To load individual samples, again use the browse buttons to highlight the sample you want to load, then hold the Load Samp button and press the Sample Cell you want to load the sample into.

Browse Sample Cells / Slots / Pages:

Each Remix Deck has four pages of 16 Sample Cells (giving you a total of 64 Sample Cells per Deck). You can access each page by using the Page 1, 2, 3 & 4 buttons.

Capturing Samples:

As well as loading individual samples from file, you can also load samples into each Cell from what’s already loaded into Deck A or B or from the Loop Recorder.

Deck A is selected as a default source for Remix Deck C and Deck B for Remix Deck D. You can change this by holding Shift and pressing the Capture (Source Select) button. This will cycle through Deck A, Deck B and Loop Recorder.

To change the size of the sample you wish to capture from your chosen Deck, hold Shift and turn the Loop Size + / – dial. This will increase / decrease the loop size on your chosen Deck which will correspond directly with the Sample Cell size you’re about to capture.

To capture, just hold the Capture button and the Sample Cell you want to capture into.

Switching Decks / Pages

It’s not possible to map Maschine’s own ‘Shift’ button as it’s used for Maschine-only commands. It can only be used in conjunction with the < and > buttons to switch between Maschine templates for Deck C and Deck D. There is a separate ‘Shift’ button mapped to access secondary functions on some buttons which is mapped to Maschine’s ‘Mute’ button. The < and > buttons (without Shift held) are used to switch between the thin buttons on the top row of Maschine controlling either Slot Stop & Slot Mute or Trigger Type & Play Mode functions.

The rest of the controls should be pretty self-explanatory but if there’s anything that doesn’t make sense, please ask in the comments section below.

A note about LED feedback

I had a choice with the function of the LEDs on the drum pads: either have them light up when a sample is loaded into the cell, or to have them light up when the sample is cued and playing (I’ll explain why in the paragraph below). I went with the latter as I think it’s more important to know what samples are playing than to know whether you have samples loaded or not.

Although the LEDs on Maschine have 3 states of illumination: off, dim and on, Maschine Mk1 and Mk2 (when used as a standard MIDI controller) only display on or off states. These are represented by a dim LED (off) and a bright LED (on). An unlit LED means that the button / pad is not used. This means that it’s not possible to use all 3 states of illumination (off, dim and on) when mapping MIDI out from Traktor. It would have been nice, for example, to have an unlit pad LED to mean an empty cell, a dim LED to mean a sample is loaded and a lit LED to mean the sample is playing or cued to play. A flashing LED to indicate a cued sample would be even better! Sadly, although Traktor can give this information, Maschine can only interpret and display on / off messages.

Note also that on a Maschine Mk2, although there are multi-coloured LEDs, it’s not possible to map MIDI messages to different colours when using Maschine as a controller. This means, sadly, that pads can’t be made to change colour depending on their state (ie., empty, loaded, cued and playing).
